SphereOptics Acquired by Halma
Acquisition to be merged with Halma photonics company Labsphere

January 20, 2010

Halma p.l.c., a leading safety, health and sensor technology group based in the United Kingdom, has acquired SphereOptics, a maker of custom light measurement technologies.  SphereOptics will join Halma’s global group of photonics businesses as it is merged with light metrology industry leader, Labsphere.

SphereOptics (www.sphereoptics.com), based in New Hampshire, USA, manufactures and distributes precision products for use in light metrology applications. The company’s standard and custom radiometric and photometric products address the specific needs of the aerospace, automotive, electronic imaging, laser diode, LED, lighting, medical imaging and optics industries.

Also based in New Hampshire, Labsphere (www.labsphere.com) has a strong worldwide presence in light testing and measurement and optical coatings.  The company’s products include LED, laser and traditional light source light measurement systems; uniform light sources for imaging device calibration; spectroscopy accessories; and high diffuse reflectance materials and coatings for applications in backlit panel displays, computed radiography, and system calibration.

"The reunion of two industry leaders, Labsphere and SphereOptics, will provide our customers with innovative, high quality products, world class technical expertise and unequalled customer service," commented Labsphere President Kevin Chittim.

Halma (www.halma.com) is a holding company of almost 50 worldwide subsidiaries that develop and manufacture products to improve quality of life for people worldwide. The company’s business groups focus on industrial safety, health and analysis and infrastructure sensors.  SphereOptics joins Labsphere, Ocean Optics (www.oceanoptics.com), Ocean Thin Films (www.oceanthinfilms.com), Fiberguide (www.fiberguide.com), and Mikropack GmbH (www.mikropack.de) in the photonics sector of the health and analysis business group.

Halma’s photonics companies are established brands with market-leading technologies and products which generate light, condition light and analyze the interaction of light on substances. Their products range from spectrometers to complementary technologies such as chemical sensors, analytical instrumentation, optical fibers, thin films and optics. The scope of applications is vast, from cancer detection to specialized architectural and theater lighting filters.  The acquisition of SphereOptics and its complementary technologies will create opportunities for technical and marketing collaborations as Halma continues to grow this sector.

SphereOptics introduces Vacuum Compatible Radiance Source for sensor calibration

September 1, 2008

SphereOptics is pleased to introduce the development of a Vacuum Compatible Radiance Sphere Sources build to operate inside a thermal-vacuum chamber. These integrating sphere-based uniform light source systems are designed to perform critical flat-fielding and radiometric calibration of satellite sensors and cameras under the same atmospheric conditions where they will be deployed.  This eliminates many of the uncertainties of conventional measurement methods where modifications or assumptions are needed to translate the measurement results to space conditions. Users can now obtain critical flat field data for spatial and angular correction of camera image non-uniformities to produce more reliable data and clearer, crisper images from satellite cameras   Information about these systems can be found on our site under Luminance/Radiance Systems.

SphereOptics moves offices to new, larger facility in New Hampshire

We are pleased to announce the expansion and relocation of our offices and manufacturing facility from Contoocook NH to Horseshoe Pond Lane in Concord, NH 03301.

The move stems from unprecedent growth over the past few years, and SphereOptics’ commitment to providing high quality products and services. The new 12,000 square foot facility provides space for larger research and development laboratory, and a state-of-the-art calibration laboratory, as well as expanded manufacturing and administration office areas.

NEW LITERATURE AVAILABLE

Luminance/Radiance Calibration Sources
SphereOptics announces the publication of a six page, full color brochure describing a series of integrating sphere-based uniform light source systems for calibration and testing of electronic imaging sensors, remote sensing equipment, and for use as UV radiance calibration sources. The brochure gives product details and specifications and presents some of our custom system designs. The brochure is free upon request, or you may download a pdf version from the literature section of this website.

LCS LED Characterization Systems
A new 6-page, full color brochure describing our new LCS LED Characterization Systems is available either in print version or downloadable in pdf format from the literature section of this website. The LCS LED Characterization system is designed with measurement accuracy, flexibility and ease-of-use in mind. The base LCS system accepts a series of integrating spheres, ILEDA or ILEDB adapters to achieve any geometry needed to measure optical, spectral, color and purity characteristics of LEDs Lamps and large light sources.

The lumen is the luminous flux emitted into a solid angle of 1 steradian from a source which has an intensity of 1 candela. In other words, 1 candela = 1 lumen/steradian.
The lumen is a weighted value of watts. The luminous flux of a source is calculated by integrating the product of the spectral flux (power per unit wavlength band) and the CIE V-lambda curve. The integrated value, or area under the curve represents the total lumens from this source.
